Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions 1st Edition

Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions 1st Edition
Author: Julian P. T. Higgins ID: 0470699515

Review

“Cochrane Collaboration is a leader in conducting scientific systematic reviews, and the contributors to this book are a group of acclaimed scientists from all over the world, making this is a unique publication in this field.” (Doody’s, 2009)

From the Back Cover

Healthcare providers, consumers, researchers and policy makers are inundated with unmanageable amounts of information, including evidence from healthcare research. It has become impossible for all to have the time and resources to find, appraise and interpret this evidence and incorporate it into healthcare decisions. Cochrane Reviews respond to this challenge by identifying, appraising and synthesizing research-based evidence and presenting it in a standardized format, published in The Cochrane Library (http://ift.tt/P2ykDV).

The Cochrane Handboook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions contains methodological guidance for the preparation and maintenance of Cochrane intervention reviews. Written in a clear and accessible format, it is the essential manual for all those preparing, maintaining and reading Cochrane reviews. Many of the principles and methods described here are appropriate for systematic reviews applied to other types of research and to systematic reviews of interventions undertaken by others. It is hoped therefore that this book will be invaluable to all those who want to understand the role of systematic reviews, critically appraise published reviews or perform reviews themselves.

This is the standard for meta-analyses. It is fairly thorough, just dull. That is the reason for the 3 stars. It is probably wrong to expect this to be something other than dull. Recent changes are available on the Cochrane web site.

An excellent reference for pharmaceutical/medical writers as well as researchers in medicine and public health, possibly along with a good text on meta-analysis.

The most up to dated book in the theme. Very important to people like me, that do not have time to frequent a formal course of epidemiology. I did the right choice.

Training to climb is very sport specific. That is….. there is ample evidence that cross training to climb is not useful. For example being able to do 100 pull ups is probably not going to enhance your climbing ability much. Perhaps the only exception to this rule once you reach a certain level of climbing, is "reading" to climb. I must stress that without a certain baseline climbing experience reading about HOW to climb is not going to help you . However, as you excel you will find yourself plateauing. This is when mentoring will be of greatest benefit. Most cannot afford to be mentored by an experienced climber so you do the next best thing….mentor by proxy…you read a book.

In this regard, this book is one of the best "mentors" around. It takes you from your current plateaued level of climbing into an exponential phase of improvement. The book explains climbing by looking at movement which is composed of space, time, force and balance, efficiency of movement and psychology of movement. After explaining these topics the author gives specific exercises to improve these aspects of climbing.

The author then integrates these concepts into a coherent training schedule by first identifying your current level of performance in actual climbing. He then spells out what you should be doing at that level of climbing to progress to the next level. I particularly appreciated this part of the book.

For example let’s say your current level of climbing is 5.10. He gives you a detailed training schedule of how to improve your level of climbing to 5.11. He holds your hand telling you how to warm and for how long, what bouldering problems to do, what climbs to do and how to do them, how to train both aerobically and anaerobically.
Pluses:

This is an impressive and comprehensive guide to understanding and improving your climbing. It is my favorite book on climbing technique. (Unfortunately, there isn’t much decent competition. Niche, meet potential audience). There are some great movement exercises that I’ve found very useful in my training (the particularly the traversing and turning section). The authors worked incredibly hard and put together a book that is well worth the cost, even without the DVD. The DVD that’s included is worth the price of the book itself, as it’s extremely concise, well organized, and clear.

Minuses:

The title is wrong. This is essentially a textbook written for experienced climbers, or better, for people teaching climbing to experienced climbers. For the lay reader, it is far too dense and jargon-y. The intrasport climbing jargon is always frustrating enough (who makes this stuff up?), and then layer on kinesiology and physics, and…oof. Not an easy read. The overall organizational structure is not that effective (too much theory up front) and some of the instructions seem rushed and are difficult to follow. As a self-coaching guide, it would have been more effective with less theory and more technique and training. Overall, the book is written for someone climbing in the high 5.11s and up – the initial examples are for people climbing around 5.12. There are a few later examples for those of us climbing in the 10s (yes, that’s me and that’s my bias), but they seem a little tacked on. I would like the glossary to be much more thorough, but again, there is an assumption that the reader already knows quite a bit about the subject.

Overall:

This is the best reference book on climbing technique that I have ever read. By far.

After a long series of really good one-off thrillers from this author, I wasn’t sure how I felt about last year’s hero in DAMAGE, Jeff Hinkley, making a return appearance. But any potential skepticism disappeared in the first few chapters, when I got well and truly hooked into an intricate plot that packs a huge wallop of suspense from the very start. In fact, if you think you got to know the main character in the first book, think again. Yes, the superb thinking ability and likability are still there, but life even for action heroes doesn’t always go as planned, and Jeff is poked, prodded, provoked, and pummeled in these pages to the point where I found myself genuinely–and frequently–hoping against hope that he would prevail. And along the way his character evolved into a Jeff I found even more complex and likable. (Not that you need to have read DAMAGE to enjoy this adventure for itself. You absolutely don’t.)

There’s a sense of adventurous fun and light-heartedness in FRONT RUNNER that I think adds new spark to the character and encompasses a new supporting cast, yet the multi-part plot includes ongoing serious and breathtaking twists and turns that all tie together at the end in the cleverest of ways. Mostly, it’s a well-thought-out, rollicking, world-romping, just-plain-good adventure that leaves you longing for just a few more pages even though it is ultimately satisfying. And I hated to leave Jeff and friends; it’s going to be a long wait till next year’s book when we can see what he’s up to again!

Dick Francis fans should find much to embrace here in the Francis tradition while also enjoying the differences in style, plotting, and both light and heavy touches that are unique to Felix’s work.
One of the most successful continuations of the works of a popular author who has passed away is, IMHO, that of Felix Francis, son of the late Dick Francis. I used to love reading the father’s tales set in Great Britain’s horseracing scene (most often steeplechase), and I was very sorry to learn of his death in 2010 at the age of 89.

Felix Francis, a physics teacher, helped his father with both research and writing (as did, reportedly, the late Francis’s wife and Felix’s mother, Mary, who died in 2000). So in 2011, when Felix wrote his first solo book, "Gamble," I wasn’t too surprised that it wasn’t much of a departure from earlier books Felix had co-written – nor were the three others that preceded this one.

Now that I’ve finished it, consider me still happy. This may not be the best of the Felix-written bunch; except for the main character, British Horseracing Authority undercover investigator Jeff Hinkley, none of the other characters ever really developed much of a "personality," although the plot moved quickly and held my attention throughout. Hinkley, by the way, also appeared in the Felix Francis-written "Damage," published in 2014, but the two books stand alone.

This one begins as a popular winning jockey reveals to Hinkley that he’s lost at least one race on purpose; but before he can spill the rest of the beans, he dies in what’s being called a suicide. Meanwhile, Hinkley – who has come to the jockey’s home to learn more – ends up locked in the jockey’s super-hot sauna. Apparently, the jockey decided he didn’t want his secret to get out, but then, overcome with remorse, he offed himself.

I’ve had super-strong anxiety all my life, on and off with depression. Everybody knows the best way to help yourself permanently is a combination of medicine and behaviour modification, so after years of only doing the former, I set out to find the best information to tackle the latter.

I looked at a million books online and in the library, bought a few, but by miles this is the best one of the lot. If you can only buy ONE book in your life to help you, make it this one.

It is a fascinating read from beginning to end. I came to it not really caring why or how my brain was making me anxious- I just knew I wanted to stop how I was feeling. In fact, the most interesting part of the book is explaing how and why your brain causes your anxiety. Far from being a dry medical monologue of terminology and bio-chemistry, the information and the way it was presented was more like watching a fascinating documentry on Discovery Health. The information is solid and presented in a passionate and entertaining way (without dumbing anything down either, I might add) which says something for the author’s talent and style. I found myself smiling or chuckling sometimes when she’d explain a concept and why it works, and while I’m turning the page my brain is yelping, "Yeah, but so what! What if x, y or z is happening to you, then it’s not going to work is it!?" only to read on the next page when she continues that she’s ALREADY thought of my secret protestation, and goes on to shoot it down with logic and facts. Very funny!

This isn’t a top 10 list like an extended Oprah magazine article, nor is it a finger wagging book telling you things like if you are feeling anxious to go write in your gratitude journal or take a bubble bath and give yourself affirmations in a mirror.
"When talking about anxiety and how to control it, it is important to understand that the nervous system is automatic and operates without your control, but you can take it over on purpose." ~ pg. 11

"The 10 Best-Ever Anxiety Management Techniques" is one of the most helpful books on anxiety I’ve ever read. Margaret Wehrenberg believes in using the brain to change the brain. She is well qualified to write this book as she once suffered from panic attacks and worry.

There are many practical ways to avoid panic and one of them was surprising. Avoiding coffee or other beverages with caffeine can help you avoid panic attacks. To read more about this subject look for Caffeine Blues: Wake Up to the Hidden Dangers of America’s #1 Drug. It was also interesting to read about avoiding aspartame (stevia is better and natural) because it increases anxiety. I was surprised to also read that mitral valve prolapse (a heart condition one doctor told me I had) can trigger panic.

Margaret Wehrenberg gives good advice about how to deal with cell phones and e-mail. She suggests a few essential oils you can put in the tub to help you relax. Emptying the mind by making a list also seems to be calming. While these things work, the best part of the book is about breathing deeply.

If you are suffering from anxious thoughts there is a way to stop them even if you think that is impossible. By persisting and using the techniques in this book you can see good results. There is a section on the importance of positive self-talk and how to deal with perfectionism.

The Legal Analyst: A Toolkit for Thinking about the Law
Author: Visit ‘s Ward Farnsworth Page ID: 0226238342

Review

“Every good lawyer knows that there’s a standard set of argumentative moves that are repeatedly made in different legal settings.  Farnsworth’s book is chock full of the kind of tools that every legal analyst should have in his or her back pocket.  This ambitious book is likely to spur a lively debate about what exactly are the essential tools of legal analysis.  While some will grouse that their pet tool was excluded, the books points toward a new way of organizing the first-year curriculum.  Farnsworth is forging a new pedagogical canon.”

(Ian Ayres, Townsend Professor, Yale Law School and author of Super Crunchers)

“This is one of those rare books that will actually raise the level of analysis at every law school in the country. A must-read not only for students just beginning law school, but indeed for anyone who could use a reminder of how diverse and powerful the legal toolkit really is.”

(Douglas Lichtman, Professor, University of Chicago Law School)

“This book is a very accessible introduction to the major ideas of modern legal thinking and useful survey of current thinking in the field.  It covers an extraordinarily broad range of topics in a limited space and is very clearly written, studded with interesting examples and observations. It can profitably be read by law students, lawyers, and lay people with an interest in the legal system.”

(Daniel Farber, Sho Sato Professor of Law, University of California, Berkeley)

The Legal Analyst provides an engaging and enlightening introduction to the most essential concepts of legal reasoning. In exceptionally clear prose, Ward Farnsworth walks the reader through concepts such as the Coase Theorem, the Prisoner’s Dilemma, and Property Rules and Liability Rules—peeling away the fog of confusion that often envelops them to reveal the deep and startlingly simple insights that they offer. The reader comes away from the book with a toolkit of ideas that can be used to take apart and examine almost any legal issue.”

(Oona A. Hathaway, Associate Professor of Law, Yale Law School)

“This is an outstanding book that occupies a significant and unique niche in the literature of jurisprudence and legal methodology. Farnsworth introduces students and practitioners alike to basic methods of legal analysis across a broad range of disciplines. This book should become the ultimate ‘toolkit’ for those new to the profession.”

(David J. Bederman, Emory University School of Law)

About the Author

Ward Farnsworth, who clerked for both Judge Richard A. Posner and Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, is professor of law and Nancy Barton Scholar at the Boston University School of Law. He is the coauthor of Torts: Cases and Questions.

The author says he intends his book to be of interest to "law students, lawyers, scholars, and anyone else with an interest in the legal system". The pity is that most people are unaware of the impact of the legal system and its impact on their daily lives. A book like "The Legal Analyst", unfortunately, is not for the average citizen. It took me months of nibbling, reading a bit at a time, to get through these fascinating, but densely written book.

"The Legal Analyst" is excellent: informative, learned and challenging, all at the same time. The alternative title considered was "Thinking Like a Law Professor" and that might have been more appropriate.

The value of the book is that instead of discussing rules as so many law texts do, Professor Farnsworth introduces us here – quite effectively – to tools for thinking about the law.

I am not a lawyer, but lawyers are my clientele and I play a role in litigation as an expert witness and consultant. I am also an American who is very concerned about the direction of the nation and the fate of its Constitution, the very document that makes us a nation of laws.

Professor Farnsworth is a gentle guide. He avoids footnotes. He doesn’t use dry academic language. He is, matter of fact, pretty straightforward. But the subject matter itself, while always challenging, is sometimes dry. There are thirty chapters on the tools of legal thought, prefaced by a introduction that poses an interesting challenge. If a robber enters a bank, takes customer hostage and threatens to kill a hostage if he doesn’t get $5,000, should the bank be held liable when the robber gets no money and kills the hostage? (I’m not going to tell.
My main goal in teaching my introductory Economics class is to give students a good set of mental tools for understanding the world. This semester, I had a student who already had a surprisingly good understanding of game theory and questions of knowledge and proof. As we talked after class, he mentioned that he had learned these things from a book assigned for an introductory law class. After I asked about the book, he lent it to me.

From the minute I started reading ‘The Legal Analyst’, I saw that it was consistently excellent. About two-thirds of it was a readable, intuitive, high-quality summary of things I already knew, and the other third was new information that I am very glad to have. After finishing the book, my professional opinion is that it is extraordinarily good. Anyone who studies it will be a much better thinker and citizen.

‘The Legal Analyst’ is not just a law textbook. The subtitle is ‘A toolkit for thinking about the law’. These should be reversed. The title of the book should be ‘A Toolkit for Thinking’ and the subtitle should be ‘using examples from the legal system’. The book is an excellent overview of a lot of very important things, such as incentives, thinking at the margin, game theory, the social value of rules and standards, heuristics and biases in human thinking, and the tools of rational thinking. It has the best intuitive explanation of Bayes’ Theorem I have ever seen, making this incredibly important mental tool available for everyone’s use.

I am very glad that law students are reading ‘The Legal Analyst’. They will be much better thinkers as a result. The existence of this book makes me more optimistic about the future of our government and legal system.

Best Friends, Worst Enemies: Understanding the Social Lives of Children Hardcover – August 28, 2001
Author: Ph. D. Michael Thompson ID: 0345438094

From Publishers Weekly

Not since Dr. Spock or Penelope Leach has there been such a sensitive and practical guide to raising healthy children and this one doesn’t end at potty training. Child therapists Thompson (coauthor of bestseller Raising Cain) and Cohen (Playful Parenting) have teamed up with Washington Post columnist and children’s writer Grace (all three are parents) to describe the social lives of kids and the appropriate roles of parents, teachers and school administrators. They explore the stages of children’s development, from parent-bonded to quasi-asocial toddler, the learning-the-rules phase in elementary school and adolescent and romantic bonding. Each phase may bring some negative experiences including some outright cruelty that can be hard on both parents and children, but sometimes necessary for learning about the world. They advise parents to think of themselves as “lifeguards” at the pool, aware of what’s going on with their kids, but only intervening in the rare crisis. The book wraps up on a practical note, with chapters on how schools can be proactive and how parents can be most useful. Their advice? Don’t worry so much, set a good example, keep perspective and relax most kids turn out okay. Thompson and Grace’s breezy “we’ve all been there” anecdotal style will bring great comfort to any parents who’re worried about their kid’s social life in other words, any parent. (Sept.)Forecast: The planned 12-city author tour and print advertising in the New York Times and USA Today will yield big sales, supported by the strength of Thompson’s name and Grace’s media connections.

From Library Journal

Bullying has become an area of concern in the media and society. This book discusses that topic but weaves it into a broader study of children’s friendships. Thompson, a clinical psychologist and coauthor of Raising Cain; Grace, an author of children’s books and a former columnist for the Washington Post; and psychologist Cohen (Playful Parenting) present a developmental perspective as they describe how children’s social lives develop from toddlerhood to adolescence. Research and analysis are interspersed with personal anecdotes and vignettes in an engaging style. The book concludes with advice to teachers and parents on how to improve social life in schools and support children’s friendships. This is not a formulaic, how-to book. As the authors themselves acknowledge, the best way to learn about friendship is to practice it. However, it does provide useful perspective on a critical aspect of adolescent development, which tends to be overlooked until schoolyard feuds erupt into violent confrontations. The book may also be reassuring to parents since it outlines information on current dating styles, acceptable ranges of friendship patterns, and normal gender differences in interpersonal relationships. Recommended for public library parenting collections to complement Charlene C. Giannetti and Margaret Sagarese’s more narrowly focused Cliques: 8 Steps To Help Your Child Survive the Social Jungle (LJ 2/1/01). Antoinette Brinkman, M.L.S., Evansville, IN

This book deserves many more than five stars for its careful, thoughtful, and detailed look at how children develop their social lives. Like all remarkable books, it will extend your understanding beyond your personal life experiences and provide simple, common sense guidelines for achieving outstanding results. If you only read one book this year about improving the social life of your child, make it this one!
Every book I read about the psychological problems of youngsters focuses on the forms of social exclusion and bullying that typically occur in schools and neighborhoods. Best Friends, Worst Enemies takes that as the starting point, explains what causes the social exclusion and bullying, and details what schools and parents can do to eliminate it.
Social connection between children begins at a younger age than most people believe. The book details videotaped studies of infants watching and connecting with each other. Then, step-by-step, the authors show you how social interaction develops from those early months through to dating. I was particularly impressed by the conceptual description of youngsters being assigned a place versus the in group (in or out, and high or low status in that role). Although I could not articulate it, that certainly captures my recollection of those painful teenage years.
The use of animal studies is persuasive for the ways that humans often behave. I found myself chuckling over the descriptions of Alpha male and Queen Bee female behaviors.
The best part of the book is that it points out that exclusion is bad for those who do it, as well as for those who suffer from it. So all parents and all youngsters should be concerned.
The book avoids being too technical about psychological concepts.
This book has been a help in understanding my five-year-old’s peer relationships, and is thought-provoking even for non-parents. I found the book well-organized and well-written. It helps make sense of children’s behavior in terms of their needs for "connection, recognition, and power." It points out that children balance these three needs. Soon after reading this book, my son provided a stunningly concrete example of this. He and his friend had drawn chalk "tornado spinners" on the driveway. My son said, "My tornado spinner is more powerful than yours, because it’s bigger." The other boy quietly said, "I’m not sure if I want to be friends with you any more." My son said, "OK, OK, they’re the same power." The need for connection had won over the need for power and recognition.
There are some helpful hints to be gleaned from the book as well. Here’s one I related to. Often, if a child has a problem at school with another child one day, the parent will tend to ask the child on the following day, "So, how did it go with Johnny today?" Your child, meanwhile, had forgotten all about the problem, but your comment provokes a "come to think of it…" reaction, causing the child to continue to dredge up negatives.
The book divides children into "accepted," "rejected," and "neglected" types, to describe how their peers treat them. I fell squarely into the "neglected" category, which I think explains my lack of understanding of the "need to belong" that so many people feel — I wasn’t really "in the game."
The authors mention a fascinating psychological experiment dealing with the need to belong.

Carry On, Warrior takes its place among the best ofspiritual memoirs as the kind of book readers will want to return to again andagain. It reads like a conversation with a close friend, but impacts theheart like an encounter with the divine.” (Rachel Held Evans, author of Evolving in Monkey Town and a Year of Biblical Womanhood)

“An inspirational guide. Only by living in a state of loving vulnerability [was Melton able] to do what she desired most: touch others and be touched by them in return. Gentle words of wisdom from a woman driven by ‘senseless, relentless hope.’” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Refreshingly frank. Writing, or as she calls it ‘living out loud,’ is for Melton a bracing therapy to chase away loneliness, learn humility, and banish the fears of revealing the less than flattering sides of herself.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Glennon Doyle Melton is church and Carry On, Warrior reads like one of those old rollicking hymns that make you want to stand up at the end and shout, “Amen!” Life is indeed “brutiful” but Glennon’s humor, warmth, and honesty are profound reminders that there is beauty in our struggle. I can’t stop thinking about this book.” (Brené Brown, Ph.D. New York Times bestselling author of Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Tra)

“First and foremost, Melton’s book is chock-a-block with great characters, and she’s number one. Melton pulls this off with the help of smart, funny, plain prose.”— (The Agony Column Bookotron.com)

“Carry On Warrior is like sitting down for a cup of coffee with a friend to share stories, laughter, and tears, mixed with a whole lot of “me too!”s and “I thought I was the only one.” You leave refreshed, renewed, and reminded that we aren’t alone in this. Not even a little. It isn’t the kind of book you put down and say “oh, that was good.” It’s the kind of book you put down, then go to the store and buy three more copies because you know you are going to run into someone who needs them.” (Examiner.com)

“Glennon’s writing is like a warm embrace. She shines that little light of hers over the whole wide mommy world, reminding us that it is OK – more than OK, our right – to be who we are, no apologies. And we as mothers matter. Because when you spend so much time focusing on everyone else’s needs, you often forget that you count too.” (Family Circle.com)

“Will melt your heart and inspire you in one fell swoop!” (Allparenting.com)

Carry On, Warrior is precisely the kind of book I hope the parents in my congregation will read. Melton is a richly gifted storyteller, and her shamelessness is the best kind, rooted in a refusal to believe that she is anything other than a forgiven and beloved child of God.” (Katherine Willis Pershey, associate Pastor First Congregational Church of Western Springs Illinois Christian Century Magazine)

“Glennon is…a fantastic writer and speaker — funny, real, open, passionate, heartfelt, and inspiring. I was inspired both personally and professionally by her presence, her talent, her humility, her message and her vulnerability.” (Mike Robbins Huffington Post, Good News Blog)

“Every once in a while, a writer turns up who is just that special. This is definitely the case with Glennon Doyle Melton. She’s a hit because everything she writes runs deep and true–and makes us laugh. Glennon’s like your favorite girlfriend: game to talk about anything, unafraid to take chances, and refreshingly honest about her past and present struggles.” (Parents.com)

“Sometimes, someone says exactly what you need to hear right when you need it most. Glennon Doyle Melton is that someone for me. I’ve been reading her lovely, funny new book, Carry on, Warrior—and when I got to the chapter titled, ‘Don’t Carpe Diem,’ I knew I’d found a spirit guide.” (Ellen Pocost Westchester Parent Magazine)

“Melton, God love her, has the courage and the resolve and the wit to show us all of her dimensions. She’s the anti-Instagram. Her words make the world a better place. And a healing place.” (Chicago Tribune)

“Glennon Melton is a natural storyteller, but it’s herradical honesty and compassion which enable this book to speak right to theheart of the reader. Glennon’s words change readers. Herstories are hilarious, sad, poignant, but they also push and pull at the wallswe’ve put up around ourselves. She honors the complexity of our modernlives, tells us it’s okay to be human, to ask for help, but also reminds us howgreat it feels to do good in the world. Carry On, Warrior is animportant portrait of contemporary womanhood, one that encourages us to takechances and love big.” (Megan Mayhew Bergman, author of Almost Famous Women)

It’s easy to look at our lives and think they are just one big ball of confusion and worry. But, one thing that Glennon Doyle Melton makes clear in Carry On, Warrior is that fact that love shines through regardless of your life’s circumstances. It’s important to let your love be the focal point of your life rather than the clutter and mess of day-to-day living. In these stories and essays, you’re going to find a wide variety of funny, heartwarming, and insightful chunks of wisdom. Doyle Melton’s storytelling is some of the most relatable I’ve ever come across. You feel like you are there with her has she’s telling these anecdotes directly to you. Again, the message behind most of these stories is that love will always win out. It’s up to you to be on the winning side.

Love is valuable in every aspect of your life, but so is taking charge. I read 27 Quick Life Transformation Tips: Simple & Effective Methods For Making This Your Best Year Ever earlier this year, and I’ve discovered insights about my life that I never knew existed. This book has helped me make positive transformations throughout this year, and I am so blessed to have found it in my search for greater peace, love, and understanding. The tips in the book are clear-cut and straightforward, but they offer the kind of deep, poignant wisdom that many of us need on a day-to-day basis. This book has helped me with my job, my family, my financial issues, and virtually every area of life that needs to be worked on. In addition to Carry On, Warrior, I take it with me everywhere I go.
I really feel that I need to review this is two parts to accurately convey my feelings about this book, so I’m going to start with the nitty gritty here–the writing. I find books written from blogs to be problematic. Writing a book and writing a blog are not the same thing and, taking pieces from a blog and putting them into a book tends to be unsatisfying for me. A blog post does not a chapter make. I’m sure there have been blogs to books that are able to avoid this misstep, but Carry On, Warrior is not one of them.

Melton’s writing is entertaining–in small doses. I suppose if I had had the luxury to read one chapter of this book every couple of days I might have found it more satisfying, but that was not the case. While there were passages, and sometimes entire chapters, that I found entertaining, the book as a whole was just too, well, bloggy.

Carry On, Warrior also fell into the chronology trap. On a blog, you can follow whatever timeline your heart desires–it is one of the freedoms a blog allows. However, you cannot apply that same principle in a book. Melton seemed to be all over the place with her chronology. For example, she talked about wanting to adopt. Then she talked about not adopting, then she finished the book with the entire adoption drama. I really just couldn’t keep things straight.

Okay, part number two. If you are a fan of Melton’s site, Momastery, you will like this book. In fact, I’d be surprised if you didn’t absolutely love it. And you should stop reading this review right now.

I will admit that I’m not a regular reader of her blog, but I "like" her on Facebook and sometimes I pop in to see what she’s writing about.

I’ve been sitting on this review for a couple of days after finishing the book, chewing the story over and over, trying to digest everything that happened, trying to get over all the heartbreak and emotional pain this book has caused me. I am still working on all that. I honestly don’t know how to review this book. It was both exhilarating and sad, inspiring and depressing, hopeful and dark. I got so close to the characters – to Theo in particular – they felt more like friends than just fictional creations. They made me laugh, swoon and then ugly cry (the ugliest cry since The Fault in Our Stars). This book – this story – really hit me hard and I am still trying to get my s*** together.

This is a story of a girl saved by the boy who couldn’t be saved himself. It’s such a beautiful tale. Incredibly honest, gritty, moving and profoundly affecting. Possibly life changing. Probably even life saving.

I want to tell you about the plot. About Theo and Violet. About how they met, how their lives began to intertwine with each other, wrapping themselves around one another and creating the most breathtaking symbiosis of all times. I want to tell you about their feelings – for each other, for their families, for the rest of the world. Their fears and struggles and dreams. Their wandering project, all the places they’ve visited, all the things they left behind, all the post it notes and their meaning. I do want to tell you about it all, but at the same time I don’t. I just can’t. You need to experience all that by yourself. This book demands it. There’s simply no other way.

To me, this book is perfect. The more I think about it – and I do think about it a lot – the more I understand. The more I understand, the more I appreciate it.

Principles and Practice of Structural Equation Modeling, Third Edition Third Edition Edition

Principles and Practice of Structural Equation Modeling, Third Edition (Methodology in the Social Sciences) Third Edition Edition
Author: Rex B. Kline PhD ID: 1606238779

Review

“I would strongly recommend this book for use as a primary text in any SEM course. It offers a clear, applied presentation of complicated SEM techniques for a wide array of audiences with various abilities. The text would be beneficial for students with a limited background in theoretical statistics, as well as those with a strong understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of SEM. I often refer to this text in my everyday work, due to the clarity with which the material is presented.”–Greg Welch, PhD, Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

“The skill and knowledge sets for evaluating and using SEM have become important components of social science education. Kline provides a text that is accessible for graduate students, practitioners, and researchers who are not intimately familiar with SEM techniques. In addition, he effortlessly summarizes current information that researchers who already use SEM should have. The reorganization of the material, new topic boxes, new Web page, and updated technical information enhance an already great resource. A major strength of the book is the individual chapter examples with explanation of the values provided from a variety of statistical analysis packages. I will continue to use this third edition as the primary text in my SEM course, and highly recommend it as both a text and a technical resource.”–James B. Schreiber, PhD, Center for Advancing the Study of Teaching and Learning, Duquesne University

“In the third edition, Kline has improved the pedagogical value of his book relative to prior editions and to other SEM books. The many exercises help a reader understand how to apply important chapter concepts, making the book not only useful for an SEM course, but also an effective resource for self-study. The Web page featuring complete computer syntax and data for the examples is very helpful. Other new material further supports a reader’s understanding of SEM; for example, Chapter 2 provides more information on multiple regression/correlation, and the chapter on data preparation has been expanded to cover important topics such as positive-definite matrices, which are among the most common problems researchers experience when using SEM. This edition also provides more information on available SEM software, including an entire chapter on the use of computer software.”–Craig Wells, PhD, School of Education, University of Massachusetts-Amherst

“Chapters 2 and 3 review important concepts in multiple regression and data screening, both of which are critical to understand before learning SEM. From an instructor’s perspective, I enjoyed reading these chapters very much. They are well written, logically organized, and easy to follow. Another strength of the book is the thorough and comprehensive reference list on various topics.”–Duan Zhang, PhD, College of Education, University of Denver

“I am excited about this book. The coverage is excellent and the writing style is friendly and direct, with a subtle humor that I find refreshing. I especially like the new topic boxes in the third edition, most of which discuss issues that I have had to address separately in lectures.”–Jacob Marszalek, PhD, Division of Counseling and Educational Psychology, University of Missouri-Kansas City

“If you didn’t think a statistics text could be riveting, read this book! The first chapter covers basic statistical concepts in better detail and more clearly than other texts that are meant to be general introductions. Discussing extremely helpful articles that have examined SEM research, Kline identifies and provides empirical evidence of potential problems with using and reporting SEM. This helps readers understand what to do (and what not to do) from the very beginning. I love it that one of the goals is to help readers avoid common mistakes in SEM.”–Debbie Hahs-Vaughn, PhD, Department of Educational Research, Technology, and Leadership, University of Central Florida

“This is now the #1 book I will recommend to students and substantive researchers (who are not quantitative specialists) who want to learn SEM! Compared to most SEM books that I have seen, this one strikes a better balance between accessibility and breadth. In the third edition, Kline not only has updated the material, but has substantially improved it. He adds more depth to certain topics–such as estimation, in Chapter 7–and covers some intermediate-to-advanced topics not described in the previous edition, all at a level appropriate for beginners.”–Noel A. Card, PhD, Division of Family Studies and Human Development, University of Arizona

“A terrific introduction to SEM. Kline offers some of the basics and does so in a way that is quite approachable for students. I have recommended this text to a number of people who were just beginning to use SEM, and will continue to do so.”–R. Lance Holbert, PhD, School of Communications, Ohio State University
“Of all the introductory SEM texts, this one is the most interesting to read. Anyone who has taken a course in basic algebra or introductory statistics will be able to understand the ideas and work through the exercises, and those who work their way through the book will have a good foundation in SEM and will be able to use it effectively.”–David F. Gillespie, PhD, George Warren Brown School of Social Work, Washington University in St. Louis

With no prior knowledge and no one to assist me I had to learn how to apply SEM in my research work. I got hold of the second edition of this book and found it very helpful. I therefore decided to purchase this third edition and found a jewel. The structure of book changed for the better and it was extended with up to date development and applications of the methodology. I would never have believed that I would so much enjoy reading a statistics book.
The book starts off with a concise overview of the statistical methods which are at the roots of SEM. This overview is just right to give you the broader perspective and the important techniques without going too much into details. It is also used later in the book for reference when details of the SEM methods are discussed.
The book then discusses in depth the various aspects of the SEM methodology. It addresses it from the perspective of the analysis process as well as the analysis techniques. From the process point of view the book takes you from the model specification stage, highlighting the analysis consideration to be taken already at this point, through model identification, analysis and re-evaluation. I especially appreciated the author’s emphasis on the important place of theory in the statistical analysis. It’s the theory that drives the model and not vice versa.
The book explains well the three different models of SEM: Path Analysis (PA), Confirmative Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Regression. It does this in a way that provides you with a good overview for the first reading and then allows for more details once you decide to start using a specific model. The extensive reference list that is provided with the book allows you to further dig into levels of details that you require.
I am sure that this book will accompany me throughout my research work.

The problem with most SEM books is that they either contain so much difficult math that you already forget what the purpose of the equation was once you finish studying it, or that they are very dry "how-to" guides that explain how to feed a software program. This book is different: it communicates the big picture, explains the why and the how, and points to areas that require special attention. This is the most clearly written introductions to SEM available.

I learned SEM from Bollen’s 1989 classic, but I needed something I could recommend to grad students in applied research who haven’t studied matrix algebra or distribution theory. I was surprised to find out that Kline delivers an accessible book that also deals with important issues such as identification and estimation in a satisfactory manner. It is also up to date and addresses software. I was prepared to poo-poo this book but i think it does a good job at getting the essentials of SEM across to a non-technical audience.

Our Lost Constitution: The Willful Subversion of America’s Founding Document Paperback – June 28, 2016
Author: Visit ‘s Mike Lee Page ID: 0143108409

Review

“Anyone interested in what’s gone wrong in Washington, and how to fix it, needs to read this valuable work.”
—Glenn Beck

“Defenders of the Constitution, this is a must-read book for you. Most Americans know that our federal government is far too big and far more authoritative than our founders ever intended, and this book shows you how that happened. Buy this book, give it to friends or relatives, and arm yourselves in the fight to restore our Constitution.”
Mark Levin

“Senator Mike Lee knows how to tell a story. Combining historical fact and his own legal expertise with imagined dialogues and settings, Lee brings the sometimes dry and archaic debates of the constitutional convention in Philadelphia and other episodes to life, and with them the Constitution itself. This is truly an inspired, fascinating, and important book.”
Randy Barnett, Carmack Waterhouse Professor of Legal Theory at the Georgetown University Law Center; director of the Georgetown Center for the Constitution

“Mike Lee won election to the Senate by traveling around his state giving talks about the Constitution. Now he has written a most unusual book, which interweaves lively histories of what he calls the lost clauses of the Constitution with biting critiques of such modern issues as delegation of legislative power to agencies, NSA data collection, church and state, and Obamacare. Readers may not agree with all his conclusions, but they will encounter serious history and a conscientious attempt to grapple with modern issues in light of an enduring Constitution.”
Michael W. McConnell, professor of law; director of the Constitutional Law Center, Stanford Law School

Our Lost Constitution is one of the most fascinating and important books on our founding document that I have ever read. From early childhood on, Senator Mike Lee has studied and honored the United States Constitution. In this book he has combined history and law in an exceptional analysis of the dangers that challenge our constitutional system of government today, why the departure from the founders’ vision is so detrimental to every American, and how conscientious public officials and concerned citizens can and must join in in restoring obedience to our national charter, which is essential to protecting our liberty and making our democratic republic work again.”
Edwin Meese III, former U. S. Attorney General

“Senator Mike Lee took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, and this book proves that he takes that oath seriously. Read it, and he will walk you through the key moments in the erosion of our constitutional safeguards. Read it, and he will show you that the cause is not lost.”
Larry P. Arnn, president of Hillsdale College

Here is a book about the Constitution that places this seminal document in historical context, explains how selected parts have been overlooked or misinterpreted over the years, and offers some thoughts on how matters can be put right.

PART I explains the “lost clauses,” relates how they were subverted, and provides examples of recent consequences.

•The origination clause (tax bills must originate in the House of Representatives) is described as “the compromise that saved the constitutional convention” by persuading the big states to accept a bicameral legislature in which only one house would be selected on the basis of population. Credit the wily elder statesman, Benjamin Franklin, for pulling this rabbit out of his hat. But for the procedural workarounds that have since come into vogue, the controversial GovCare (aka Obamacare) law might not have been enacted

•The legislative powers clause vests the power to make the laws solely in Congress, whereas the president is responsible for executing the laws. Over time, however, it seemed expedient to create government agencies with delegated powers to do most of the actual legislation. The volume of regulations that are adopted by unelected government bureaucrats these days vastly exceeds the volume of legislation passed by Congress. It costs the American public some $2 trillion per year, by some estimates, to comply with all the regulations on the books.

•The First Amendment provides, among other things, that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” Based on a wealth of contemporaneous evidence, the intent was to preclude the federal government from establishing a national religion.

Two of Wells’s masterpieces get the red-carpet treatment here in these luxurious editions. Along with annotated texts, they feature scholarly introductions and appendixes, bibliographies, illustrations, and indexes. Though they are perhaps a tad pricey for most public libraries, academic collections supporting English departments should definitely invest in these volumes.

First, this edition: it’s reasonably well-formatted for a free ebook, with few typos, although the table of contents is not clickable; it clocks in at 1,841 "locations."

As to the story itself:

This is H.G. Wells’ foundational science-fiction tale of a mad scientist who discovers a way to turn himself invisible. It’s a masterfully told story that’s been entertaining readers for roughly a hundred years, and I’d lay good odds you’ll find it well worth the read.

What many readers might miss, though (I certainly did, my first time through) is that this isn’t just a sci-fi potboiler; it’s a modernization of the Platonic story of the Ring of Gyges. Beyond being a master storyteller, Wells was also an ardent philosopher and socialist, and like all of his other tales, there’s a major political point here — that morality derives from society — and some additional minor political themes, like the plight of the urban poor.

Wells’ genius here was to take the Platonic story of a Ring of Invisibility that inevitably led its wearer to commit injustice, and revitalize it in a modern context and in a way that made a sophisticated philosophical point.

Where Plato’s Glaucon states:

——–
"For all men believe in their hearts that injustice is far more profitable to the individual than justice, and he who argues as I have been supposing, will say that they are right. If you could imagine any one obtaining this power of becoming invisible, and never doing any wrong or touching what was another’s, he would be thought by the lookers-on to be a most wretched idiot, although they would praise him to one another’s faces, and keep up appearances with one another from a fear that they too might suffer injustice.

Good book but not different from the previous 7th edition, the author should have at least given new practice questions instead of just jumbling the ones from last edition. Only minor corrections and Obamacare is added, but as we all know that obamacare is still a mess so they are not gonna ask any questions on it.

I bought this book to help me with the federal portion of the Colorado law exam. The book’s practice questions and practice test were way too easy and basically just multiple choice reading comprehension questions. Unfortunately the actual test had hypothetical scenarios that required interpretation of the laws, not just knowing what the law does or doesn’t say, or which law(s) apply or don’t apply. I gave it two stars because I still found it helpful at teaching the basics and summarizing the law, I just wish it went further.

This is a splendid book both on the workings of the brain and how it can be exemplified in the art of Vienna 1900. This was after all the place and time that led to modernity making Vienna one of the pre-eminent capitals of the world. One is swept up in the feeling of being privy to the birth of the new understanding in medicine and art as it took place in Vienna 1900 in its most intense unfolding and this description is extended to later work, predominantly at US universities, often by people who derived from the Viennese school of thinking through emigration.
The work follows the tradition of the bridge-builders between the seemingly opposed subjects bringing new insights from brain-science in understanding art. It shows, in academic detail, the brain as a network that finds pleasure in the acquisition of knowledge in either field. It is rather comprehensive and learned at that.

The book is cerebral but very readable; in fact I read it in a Marathon session in preparing for a trip to New York to the Golden Adele, this Mona Lisa of the Fin de Siècle. You don’t need the trip though; there are wonderful reproductions in the book of interesting work to be analyzed. You need also not read all the academic detail, there is much to enjoy by taking glimpses or by looking at shorter summaries and graphs.

In the first part we learn, in an especially engrossing section, about the general atmosphere in Vienna during its golden time, its coffee-house and theater culture, its literary, musical and salon life but another forward force was the influence of Europe’s premier Medical School of the time in Vienna that established such routines as stethoscope or auscultation. It was the understanding of its research that urged the artists and scientists to look further below the surface.
*****
"In conversation with Paul Holdengräber, Eric Kandel will discuss the book already praised by Oliver Sacks as ‘a tour-de-force that sets the stage for a twenty-first century understanding of the human mind’ in all its richness and diversity."
*

My relation with the Viennese milieu started with my father telling me about the dream city, the reincarnation of late antiquity Alexandria, where I was born after WWII. He took his postgraduate studies in Vienna University before it was annexed by Hitler. Sam, my younger brother was fascinated with Klimt, few of his frescos still hanging on my house walls. But I was a fan of Mozart and Freud, and later I encountered the magical worlds of Dr. Kandell; thanks to the intellectual tours of Charlie Rose.

At the turn of the nineteenth century, Vienna, the pride of the Austrio-Hungarian Empire – was considered the cultural capital of Europe, by my dad and many, with its unique atmosphere and sophisticated charm. Vienna embraced a versatile mix of musicians, scientists and artists, who met in cafes and spent the evenings in sparkling salons, or gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held to amuse one another and enjoy fine taste and broaden their knowledge through conversation.

They used liberal discussions, of novel ideas that may have led to inventive conclusions, with influential results in psychology, brain science, and innovation of literature, and art. Sigmund Freud, Gustav Klimt, among many others began exploring a charming new territory: the then mystical unconscious.
"But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light." — Ephesians 5:13 (NKJV)

The Age of Insight is a hard book to categorize. Professor Kandel’s stated purpose is to demonstrate how a knowledgeable scientist can write clearly about science so that the interconnections between art and science can be exposed to those who know only about the art. As such, this book is more about informing those interested in the humanities than those whose interest is in science. As a necessary part of his method, there’s a circumscription around a narrow set of artists and literary figures rather than an attempt to make a universal statement. To have attempted otherwise would have made a hefty book into a multi-volume tome that few would read.

As someone who reads a lot of art history, history of science, and current research on mental processes, I was impressed by the conception of the book and how deftly it was carried out in ways that deepened my appreciation for subjects I have long been familiar with. I was grateful for these new perspectives. I found the book to be enjoyable for the most part. If I got to a part that was too elementary for what I wanted to absorb, I just skipped quickly through until I got to weightier material. I didn’t have to do that very often.

This book would be a wonderful gift to a budding artist or writer . . . or to an art historian in training. I’m sure that many wonderful shows could be mounted that would take advantage of the information here in ways that would delight museum and gallery goers.

Although the book will seem flawed to some, I think it succeeds in its purpose of proposing a new way to write about art and science.

From Booklist

In this tale of a kidnapping gone wrong, Mia, the black-sheep daughter of prominent Chicago judge James Dennett, impulsively decides to go home with Colin, a young man she meets in a bar. The one-night stand quickly turns into a nightmare when Colin forces her into his car in the middle of the night, and Mia learns he’s been sent to abduct her for ransom. But just before the drop-off point, Colin, for reasons unknown, decides not to hand her over to the man who has hired him and instead takes her to a remote cabin in Minnesota. Back at home, Mia’s mother, Eve, cannot understand why James doesn’t seem to take the news of his daughter’s disappearance as seriously as she does. Gabe, the detective assigned to the case, wonders the same thing. The narrative unfolds in four different perspectives—from Mia, Eve, Gabe, and Colin, in alternating chapters—which are also structured as “before” and “after.” The organization can prove puzzling, but Kubica’s debut thriller builds suspense steadily and will have readers guessing what’s really going on until the final pages. –Rebecca Vnuk

Review

"Kubica’s powerful debut…will encourage comparisons to Gone Girl. Unlike that dazzling duel between what prove to be a pair of sociopaths, this Girl has heart-which makes it all the more devastating when the author breaks it."
-Publishers Weekly, starred review

"Similar in tone to William Landay’s acclaimed Defending Jacob, this excellent debut is compulsively readable and highly recommended for anyone who loves a mystery, a suspense tale, or a psychological puzzle."
-Library Journal

"Kubica’s debut thrill builds suspense steadily and will have readers guessing what’s really going on until the final pages."
-Booklist

"A twisty, roller coaster ride of a debut. Fans of Gone Girl will embrace this equally evocative tale of a missing woman, shattered family and the lies we tell not just to each other, but especially to ourselves."

-Lisa Gardner, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Fear Nothing

"Psychologically rich and pulse pounding, The Good Girl had me hooked from the very first sentence and didn’t let go until the final word." –Heather Gudenkauf, bestselling author of The Weight of Silence and Little Mercies

Twenty-four year old Mia Dennett is the daughter of Chicago Judge James Dennett, a man of old money and dismissive family responsibilities, and British Eve Dennett, a homemaker and socialite. Sister to Grace, the oldest and a lawyer just like their father, Mia doesn’t buy into the family lifestyle; instead, she is an art teacher. Jason, her inconsistent boyfriend, is supposed to meet her on the night she is kidnapped but calls to say he has to work late.

From the beginning of the novel, the reader is aware that Mia has been taken by a man named Colin Thatcher and that he kept her in cabin in Minnesota. In fact, Mia has already been found only a few chapters in. What follows is a mixture of multiple perspectives, both before and after Mia is found, telling the story of how Mia, who refers to herself as Chloe, copes with her kidnapping, how Detective Gabe stops at nothing to find her, and how her mother Eve tries to solve Mia’s trauma-induced amnesia and help her remember the truth.

While many will suggest that Kubica’s novel follows in the same vein as Gone Girl, I actually found this to be much more entertaining. I could not put this book down whereas I struggled through Flynn’s multiple narrators. What works for Kubica is her uncanny ability to seamlessly weave both time and storytelling. The chapters are short, and each character’s narration adds something new and unique to the plot.

Colin’s “Before” chapters are the most interesting because it is through his eyes that you see what actually happened to Mia, which she doesn’t remember. I found myself anxiously skimming through some other chapters just to get to the Colin pages.
Notice to readers: Spoiler alerts in this review

Why is every book touted these days as the next "Gone Girl" or "if you loved "Gone Girl"…you’ll love this book?" They’ve done that with "The Good Girl" where the only resemblance I can see is that they both have the world "Girl" in the title. I wish and critics would stop doing this. Don’t try to hook readers like that especially when there is no comparison

After I finished reading this book, I went straight to the one star reviews to see why they hated it [after buying it because of the five star reviews] and I have to agree with a lot of their points while also admitting I liked the book more than they did. And I think I know why. It so reminded me of Patty Duke and Al Freeman, Jr. in the film "My Sweet Charlie" where a black lawyer holds a racist pregnant white girl captive and they fall in love. There was something so incredibly romantic about that movie and it happened in this book as well. A lot of reviewers are decrying the whole "Stockholm Syndrome" dynamic that occurs in this book while I thought the author did a very good job of developing the relationship between Mia and Colin. And there was something poignantly sweet as their relationship changes and they discover themselves in each other.

And while I am normally very good at plot twists [saw "Gone Girl’s" a mile away as well as "The Girl on The Train"], I missed this so kudos to all the readers who guessed the ending. I didn’t. As a matter of fact, I didn’t guess anything that was going to happen in this book. Possibly because while the other books I mentioned were overtly mysteries, "The Good Girl" was not.
I was drawn to read The Good Girl because of the "if you liked Gone Girl you’ll like this" endorsements and comments in reviews (and I read Gone Girl because my daughter highly recommended it). And though I don’t think there’s a particularly strong basis for comparison between the novels (e.g., The Good Girl is genre fiction whereas I’d say that Gone Girl crosses the line between genre and literary fiction), I enjoyed reading The Good Girl and I found it to be as much of a page turner as Gone Girl and in some ways a more satisfying read (I’m one of the many Gone Girl readers who found its ending disappointing).

I found The Good Girl entertaining and I enjoyed reading it and I think it’s an impressive first novel. The story is told from multiple first-person perspectives in a non-linear time frame, and it all hangs together quite well. It’s suspenseful, with twists, turns and surprises.

The copy I received for review purposes is the final published edition, and I was surprised to see several typos and grammatical errors (e.g., a reference to "fur trees"; a truck is referred to at one point first as a car, then a truck, then again as a car; a convenience store is called a "convenient store"; I spotted a few sentences where there were missing words; etc.). There were a few times when the story lost verisimilitude for me (the appearance of being real or true), and this has to do with details that I won’t specify to avoid venturing into spoiler territory. And there were a few times when I felt that a certain character’s first-person voice sounded more literate, articulate and educated than the character’s history might suggest could be the case. These are matters that I think should’ve been addressed by the author’s editor at Harlequin.

Dust – August 17, 2013

Dust (Silo Saga) Paperback – August 17, 2013
Author: Visit ‘s Hugh Howey Page ID: 1490904387

Review

“The final book secures the status of the Wool trilogy as a modern masterpiece” Sunday Express “We’ve become obsessed with Hugh Howey’s silo story which is basically, and in fact has been called, the NEW Hunger Games. We can’t wait to sink our teeth into the final instalment.” Grazia Daily “It’s a dystopian gem.” macworld.com “Reviewers have compared his series to The Hunger Games … but it’s better written and more thought-provoking.” Guardian

About the Author

Hugh Howey spent eight years living on boats and working as a yacht captain for the rich and famous. It wasn’t until the love of his life carried him away from these vagabond ways that he began to pursue literary adventures, rather than literal ones. Hugh wrote and self-published his first adult novel, Wool, which won rave reviews and praise from readers. Dust is the final part of the trilogy. Hugh lives in Jupiter, Florida, with his wife Amber and their dog Bella.

I didn’t intend to read DUST so fast. I announced on Facebook that I’d set aside an hour to start reading it and smoke a cigar. I figured I’d take my time, read for an hour, and then get back to work. That isn’t what happened. But first let me tell you that I entered into my foray into the finale of Hugh Howey’s enormously popular Silo Saga with some trepidation. I was afraid. Not for myself, but for Hugh… The excitement and hopes for this book would be enormous. I was afraid that regardless of how good and serviceable DUST was, I figured most people would be somewhat disappointed. It is the way of these things. Thousands upon thousands of readers had made the trek through WOOL and SHIFT and I couldn’t even imagine how Hugh was going to possibly meet the unrealistic expectations. In fact, I was prepared to accept the very real possibility that he could not.

Before I get too far into my review of DUST, let me say for those of you who want to get right to the nitty gritty, that Hugh not only met my highest expectations with DUST, but he smashed them to the ground, dropped the mic and walked away. I don’t say this as a fawning fanboy, even if that is what I am. DUST is better than I hoped it would be. Far better.

I read WOOL before I knew what all the fuss was about. I read it because I was studying indie publishing success, and I stumbled upon a book that had 1500 mostly glowing reviews (at that time) so I decided to see if it was as good as people were saying. I loved the book. I loved Hugh’s story even more. Then there was SHIFT…

Don’t get me wrong… I liked SHIFT. I liked it a lot. I wrote a five star review for it.
(CONTAINS WOOL AND SHIFT SPOILERS)

You could have fooled me. You could have said this was fan fiction from some insanely ambitious (and talented) Wool aficionado, and I would have believed you. This didn’t feel right. Not quite. The characters and the settings were the same, but something was off.

To be frank, I would have no freaking clue as to how to successfully conclude this series, I wouldn’t even dare to try. Wool was a masterpiece, Shift added to it wonderfully. Wool’s silo had its unique atmosphere. The Silo 1 of Shift was altogether different, but just as unique. Juliet’s ending remark to Donald in Third Shift gave me goosebumps, even when re-reading it before the release of Dust. It made me so psyched for an epic conclusion.

What I got instead, was something that felt like a half-inspired sequel.

STORY: The storyline is not tight, at all. I suppose parts of Shift drifted somewhat as well, but only in Dust does it become a problem. Given where Third Shift left off, you’d expect some more intensity right off the bat. Instead, we’re off to a slow start about getting a digger to work, and we learn about Jules’s support diminishing. A nice subplot, that, but ultimately it doesn’t really affect the story, and as such it’s mostly in the way. The same goes for Solo and the kids. In fact, the power of Silo 1 is so grand that whatever’s happening over there is of much greater importance, not only in the grand scheme of things, but for the fates of Jules and her people as well. Why should I care about Elise chIDg a puppy, when a man over there can kill them all at the pull of a switch?
