Review
“The skill and knowledge sets for evaluating and using SEM have become important components of social science education. Kline provides a text that is accessible for graduate students, practitioners, and researchers who are not intimately familiar with SEM techniques. In addition, he effortlessly summarizes current information that researchers who already use SEM should have. The reorganization of the material, new topic boxes, new Web page, and updated technical information enhance an already great resource. A major strength of the book is the individual chapter examples with explanation of the values provided from a variety of statistical analysis packages. I will continue to use this third edition as the primary text in my SEM course, and highly recommend it as both a text and a technical resource.”–James B. Schreiber, PhD, Center for Advancing the Study of Teaching and Learning, Duquesne University
“In the third edition, Kline has improved the pedagogical value of his book relative to prior editions and to other SEM books. The many exercises help a reader understand how to apply important chapter concepts, making the book not only useful for an SEM course, but also an effective resource for self-study. The Web page featuring complete computer syntax and data for the examples is very helpful. Other new material further supports a reader’s understanding of SEM; for example, Chapter 2 provides more information on multiple regression/correlation, and the chapter on data preparation has been expanded to cover important topics such as positive-definite matrices, which are among the most common problems researchers experience when using SEM. This edition also provides more information on available SEM software, including an entire chapter on the use of computer software.”–Craig Wells, PhD, School of Education, University of Massachusetts-Amherst

With no prior knowledge and no one to assist me I had to learn how to apply SEM in my research work. I got hold of the second edition of this book and found it very helpful. I therefore decided to purchase this third edition and found a jewel. The structure of book changed for the better and it was extended with up to date development and applications of the methodology. I would never have believed that I would so much enjoy reading a statistics book.
The book starts off with a concise overview of the statistical methods which are at the roots of SEM. This overview is just right to give you the broader perspective and the important techniques without going too much into details. It is also used later in the book for reference when details of the SEM methods are discussed.
The book then discusses in depth the various aspects of the SEM methodology. It addresses it from the perspective of the analysis process as well as the analysis techniques. From the process point of view the book takes you from the model specification stage, highlighting the analysis consideration to be taken already at this point, through model identification, analysis and re-evaluation. I especially appreciated the author’s emphasis on the important place of theory in the statistical analysis. It’s the theory that drives the model and not vice versa.
The book explains well the three different models of SEM: Path Analysis (PA), Confirmative Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Regression. It does this in a way that provides you with a good overview for the first reading and then allows for more details once you decide to start using a specific model. The extensive reference list that is provided with the book allows you to further dig into levels of details that you require.
I am sure that this book will accompany me throughout my research work.
The problem with most SEM books is that they either contain so much difficult math that you already forget what the purpose of the equation was once you finish studying it, or that they are very dry "how-to" guides that explain how to feed a software program. This book is different: it communicates the big picture, explains the why and the how, and points to areas that require special attention. This is the most clearly written introductions to SEM available.
I learned SEM from Bollen’s 1989 classic, but I needed something I could recommend to grad students in applied research who haven’t studied matrix algebra or distribution theory. I was surprised to find out that Kline delivers an accessible book that also deals with important issues such as identification and estimation in a satisfactory manner. It is also up to date and addresses software. I was prepared to poo-poo this book but i think it does a good job at getting the essentials of SEM across to a non-technical audience.
