The book wraps up on a practical note, with chapters on how schools can be proactive and how parents can be most useful. Their advice? Don’t worry so much, set a good example, keep perspective and relax most kids turn out okay. Thompson and Grace’s breezy “we’ve all been there” anecdotal style will bring great comfort to any parents who’re worried about their kid’s social life in other words, any parent. Bullying has become an area of concern in the media and society. This book discusses that topic but weaves it into a broader study of children’s friendships. Thompson, a clinical psychologist and coauthor of Raising Cain; Grace, an author of children’s books and a former columnist for the Washington Post; and psychologist Cohen (Playful Parenting) present a developmental perspective as they describe how children’s social lives develop from toddlerhood to adolescence. Research and analysis are interspersed with personal anecdotes and vignettes in an engaging style. The book concludes with advice to teachers and parents on how to improve social life in schools and support children’s friendships. This is not a formulaic, how-to book. As the authors themselves acknowledge, the best way to learn about friendship is to practice it. However, it does provide useful perspective on a critical aspect of adolescent development, which tends to be overlooked until schoolyard feuds erupt into violent confrontations. The book may also be reassuring to parents since it outlines information on current dating styles, acceptable ranges of friendship patterns, and normal gender differences in interpersonal relationships. This book deserves many more than five stars for its careful, thoughtful, and detailed look at how children develop their social lives. Like all remarkable books, it will extend your understanding beyond your personal life experiences and provide simple, common sense guidelines for achieving outstanding results. If you only read one book this year about improving the social life of your child, make it this one!
Every book I read about the psychological problems of youngsters focuses on the forms of social exclusion and bullying that typically occur in schools and neighborhoods. Best Friends, Worst Enemies takes that as the starting point, explains what causes the social exclusion and bullying, and details what schools and parents can do to eliminate it.
Social connection between children begins at a younger age than most people believe. The book details videotaped studies of infants watching and connecting with each other. Then, step-by-step, the authors show you how social interaction develops from those early months through to dating. I was particularly impressed by the conceptual description of youngsters being assigned a place versus the in group (in or out, and high or low status in that role). Although I could not articulate it, that certainly captures my recollection of those painful teenage years.
The use of animal studies is persuasive for the ways that humans often behave. I found myself chuckling over the descriptions of Alpha male and Queen Bee female behaviors.
The best part of the book is that it points out that exclusion is bad for those who do it, as well as for those who suffer from it. So all parents and all youngsters should be concerned.
The book avoids being too technical about psychological concepts.
This book has been a help in understanding my five-year-old’s peer relationships, and is thought-provoking even for non-parents. I found the book well-organized and well-written. It helps make sense of children’s behavior in terms of their needs for "connection, recognition, and power." It points out that children balance these three needs. Soon after reading this book, my son provided a stunningly concrete example of this. He and his friend had drawn chalk "tornado spinners" on the driveway. My son said, "My tornado spinner is more powerful than yours, because it’s bigger." The other boy quietly said, "I’m not sure if I want to be friends with you any more." My son said, "OK, OK, they’re the same power." The need for connection had won over the need for power and recognition.
There are some helpful hints to be gleaned from the book as well. Here’s one I related to. Often, if a child has a problem at school with another child one day, the parent will tend to ask the child on the following day, "So, how did it go with Johnny today?" Your child, meanwhile, had forgotten all about the problem, but your comment provokes a "come to think of it…" reaction, causing the child to continue to dredge up negatives.
The book divides children into "accepted," "rejected," and "neglected" types, to describe how their peers treat them. I fell squarely into the "neglected" category, which I think explains my lack of understanding of the "need to belong" that so many people feel — I wasn’t really "in the game."
The authors mention a fascinating psychological experiment dealing with the need to belong.

Love is valuable in every aspect of your life, but so is taking charge. I read 27 Quick Life Transformation Tips: Simple & Effective Methods For Making This Your Best Year Ever earlier this year, and I’ve discovered insights about my life that I never knew existed. This book has helped me make positive transformations throughout this year, and I am so blessed to have found it in my search for greater peace, love, and understanding. The tips in the book are clear-cut and straightforward, but they offer the kind of deep, poignant wisdom that many of us need on a day-to-day basis. This book has helped me with my job, my family, my financial issues, and virtually every area of life that needs to be worked on. In addition to Carry On, Warrior, I take it with me everywhere I go.
I really feel that I need to review this is two parts to accurately convey my feelings about this book, so I’m going to start with the nitty gritty here–the writing. I find books written from blogs to be problematic. Writing a book and writing a blog are not the same thing and, taking pieces from a blog and putting them into a book tends to be unsatisfying for me. A blog post does not a chapter make. I’m sure there have been blogs to books that are able to avoid this misstep, but Carry On, Warrior is not one of them.

Melton’s writing is entertaining–in small doses. I suppose if I had had the luxury to read one chapter of this book every couple of days I might have found it more satisfying, but that was not the case. While there were passages, and sometimes entire chapters, that I found entertaining, the book as a whole was just too, well, bloggy.

Carry On, Warrior also fell into the chronology trap. On a blog, you can follow whatever timeline your heart desires–it is one of the freedoms a blog allows. However, you cannot apply that same principle in a book. Melton seemed to be all over the place with her chronology. For example, she talked about wanting to adopt. Then she talked about not adopting, then she finished the book with the entire adoption drama. I really just couldn’t keep things straight.

Okay, part number two. If you are a fan of Melton’s site, Momastery, you will like this book. In fact, I’d be surprised if you didn’t absolutely love it. And you should stop reading this review right now.

I will admit that I’m not a regular reader of her blog, but I "like" her on Facebook and sometimes I pop in to see what she’s writing about.

I’ve been sitting on this review for a couple of days after finishing the book, chewing the story over and over, trying to digest everything that happened, trying to get over all the heartbreak and emotional pain this book has caused me. I am still working on all that. I honestly don’t know how to review this book. It was both exhilarating and sad, inspiring and depressing, hopeful and dark. I got so close to the characters – to Theo in particular – they felt more like friends than just fictional creations. They made me laugh, swoon and then ugly cry (the ugliest cry since The Fault in Our Stars). This book – this story – really hit me hard and I am still trying to get my s*** together.

This is a story of a girl saved by the boy who couldn’t be saved himself. It’s such a beautiful tale. Incredibly honest, gritty, moving and profoundly affecting. Possibly life changing. Probably even life saving.

I want to tell you about the plot. About Theo and Violet. About how they met, how their lives began to intertwine with each other, wrapping themselves around one another and creating the most breathtaking symbiosis of all times. I want to tell you about their feelings – for each other, for their families, for the rest of the world. Their fears and struggles and dreams. Their wandering project, all the places they’ve visited, all the things they left behind, all the post it notes and their meaning. I do want to tell you about it all, but at the same time I don’t. I just can’t. You need to experience all that by yourself. This book demands it. There’s simply no other way.

To me, this book is perfect. The more I think about it – and I do think about it a lot – the more I understand. The more I understand, the more I appreciate it.

About the Author

Rex B. Kline, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. With no prior knowledge and no one to assist me I had to learn how to apply SEM in my research work. I got hold of the second edition of this book and found it very helpful. I therefore decided to purchase this third edition and found a jewel. The structure of book changed for the better and it was extended with up to date development and applications of the methodology. I would never have believed that I would so much enjoy reading a statistics book.
The book starts off with a concise overview of the statistical methods which are at the roots of SEM. This overview is just right to give you the broader perspective and the important techniques without going too much into details. It is also used later in the book for reference when details of the SEM methods are discussed.
The book then discusses in depth the various aspects of the SEM methodology. It addresses it from the perspective of the analysis process as well as the analysis techniques. From the process point of view the book takes you from the model specification stage, highlighting the analysis consideration to be taken already at this point, through model identification, analysis and re-evaluation. I especially appreciated the author’s emphasis on the important place of theory in the statistical analysis. It’s the theory that drives the model and not vice versa.
The book explains well the three different models of SEM: Path Analysis (PA), Confirmative Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Regression. It does this in a way that provides you with a good overview for the first reading and then allows for more details once you decide to start using a specific model. The extensive reference list that is provided with the book allows you to further dig into levels of details that you require.
I am sure that this book will accompany me throughout my research work.

The problem with most SEM books is that they either contain so much difficult math that you already forget what the purpose of the equation was once you finish studying it, or that they are very dry "how-to" guides that explain how to feed a software program. This book is different: it communicates the big picture, explains the why and the how, and points to areas that require special attention. This is the most clearly written introductions to SEM available.

I learned SEM from Bollen’s 1989 classic, but I needed something I could recommend to grad students in applied research who haven’t studied matrix algebra or distribution theory. I was surprised to find out that Kline delivers an accessible book that also deals with important issues such as identification and estimation in a satisfactory manner. It is also up to date and addresses software. I was prepared to poo-poo this book but i think it does a good job at getting the essentials of SEM across to a non-technical audience.

PART I explains the “lost clauses,” relates how they were subverted, and provides examples of recent consequences.

•The origination clause (tax bills must originate in the House of Representatives) is described as “the compromise that saved the constitutional convention” by persuading the big states to accept a bicameral legislature in which only one house would be selected on the basis of population. Credit the wily elder statesman, Benjamin Franklin, for pulling this rabbit out of his hat. But for the procedural workarounds that have since come into vogue, the controversial GovCare (aka Obamacare) law might not have been enacted

•The legislative powers clause vests the power to make the laws solely in Congress, whereas the president is responsible for executing the laws. Over time, however, it seemed expedient to create government agencies with delegated powers to do most of the actual legislation. The volume of regulations that are adopted by unelected government bureaucrats these days vastly exceeds the volume of legislation passed by Congress. It costs the American public some $2 trillion per year, by some estimates, to comply with all the regulations on the books.

•The First Amendment provides, among other things, that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” Based on a wealth of contemporaneous evidence, the intent was to preclude the federal government from establishing a national religion.

First, this edition: it’s reasonably well-formatted for a free ebook, with few typos, although the table of contents is not clickable; it clocks in at 1,841 "locations."

As to the story itself:

This is H.G. Wells’ foundational science-fiction tale of a mad scientist who discovers a way to turn himself invisible. It’s a masterfully told story that’s been entertaining readers for roughly a hundred years, and I’d lay good odds you’ll find it well worth the read.

What many readers might miss, though (I certainly did, my first time through) is that this isn’t just a sci-fi potboiler; it’s a modernization of the Platonic story of the Ring of Gyges. Beyond being a master storyteller, Wells was also an ardent philosopher and socialist, and like all of his other tales, there’s a major political point here — that morality derives from society — and some additional minor political themes, like the plight of the urban poor.

Wells’ genius here was to take the Platonic story of a Ring of Invisibility that inevitably led its wearer to commit injustice, and revitalize it in a modern context and in a way that made a sophisticated philosophical point.

Good book but not different from the previous 7th edition, the author should have at least given new practice questions instead of just jumbling the ones from last edition. Only minor corrections and Obamacare is added, but as we all know that obamacare is still a mess so they are not gonna ask any questions on it.

I bought this book to help me with the federal portion of the Colorado law exam. The book’s practice questions and practice test were way too easy and basically just multiple choice reading comprehension questions. Unfortunately the actual test had hypothetical scenarios that required interpretation of the laws, not just knowing what the law does or doesn’t say, or which law(s) apply or don’t apply. I gave it two stars because I still found it helpful at teaching the basics and summarizing the law, I just wish it went further.
